Manchester United In English Premier League 2020

Our Opinion of Manchester United In English Premier League 2020

Manchester United In English Premier League 2020

We have seen a duel between Liverpool and Manchester City in the previous English Premier League two seasons. However, the 2020/21 season promises to be more competitive. One of the teams that will seek to fight in the top positions is Manchester United. After raising their performance dramatically in the second half of last season, United awakened many expectations. Below, you will see our opinion about Manchester United in the 2020/21 English Premier League season.

Manchester United 2020/21 Strengths and Weaknesses

Positive aspects or strengths:

  • The offensive line: Perhaps the Red Devils' most vital point is their attack. Bruno Fernandes' arrival meant a huge improvement for United's game. The Portuguese provided the passes and generated the plays they needed to break the opposing defensive lines.

On the other hand, transitions from defense to attack have become deadly. Solskjaer's men have a fearsome trio of Greenwood, Martial, and Rashford. Between them, they achieved 61 goals last season. We must add to this young group the recently hired Edison Cavani. If the Uruguayan shows good physical shape, he can offer experience and leadership.

  • The Pogba - Fernandes duo: The partnership between these two players was key to United's performance at the end of last season. The arrival of Fernandes plus the Pogba's physical recovery generated a partnership between them that boosted the club. Likewise, Pogba's work with Matić gave the team defensive strength and exits towards attack.
  • Depth in midfield: The arrival of talented young player Donny van de Beek will give the team even more strength in this sector. It will be interesting what he can create, playing alongside Pogba and Fernandes. Also, keep in mind the presence of outstanding players such as Fred and McTominay.

Elements To Improve

The aspect in which this Manchester United should improve the most is defense. Although they achieved up to 13 clean sheets in the previous campaign, this line needs consistency. They make occasional mistakes and have performance slumps that translate into losses. Harry Maguire must return to the level he showed at Leicester City. He has the support of Lindelöf; however, the center must reinforce the center of the defense.

Conclusion

The last campaign was the first full season for Solskjaer commanding the Red Devils. Finishing third in the EPL and reaching the semi-finals in three other tournaments was a very positive sign. In this sense, we must not forget that Manchester United is a medium and long-term project. The management and the coach are rebuilding the team based on young talent and some reinforcements. In this sense, names like van de Beek, Cavani, Reguilón, and Tellez can make a big difference. Thus, we should not yet expect this team to win the Premier League or the Champions League. In our opinion, this squad can aspire to get back into Champions League positions. They could even win one of the domestic cups that are played on British soil.

They did not get off to a good start in the 2020/21 season. Key players like Pogba performed poorly in their first three games. Then, Solskjaer must reassemble the team and return it to the level they had a few months ago. Looking to the future, the lessons learned from last season and the continuity in Solskjaer's work may pay off well.
