Premier League 2019/2020 - Best Goal Partnership

Premier League - Best Goal Partnership

Without goals, there are no victories. And without strikers, there are no goals. That's football’s main rule. But a single forward cannot carry all the offensive weight of a team looking for a positive performance.

That is why the combination of attackers is the key to sustaining an optimal offensive axis. During the Premier League's 2019/2020 season, several teams have managed to assemble scoring duets whose productivity has resulted in victories and draws for their teams.

There are teams with offensive strength, but they lack an equally effective defense. Obviously, the balance of these two aspects of the game is the combination that provides victories. However, this season will be remembered for the great performance of some teams at the offensive level. These teams are Liverpool, Manchester City, and Manchester United, among others. Their attackers have deployed their power against their rivals.

But, when defining a superior duo of forwards, we must focus on Liverpool. Most of Liverpool's excellent season relies on the formidable performance of their strikers Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané.

These two players have completely defeated the rest of the Premier’s teams' defenses during the 2019/2020 season. Their statistics are impressive. Mohamed Salah has scored 19 goals, while Sadio Mané, 17.

There is no other striking duet that can match them in terms of goals. They have also become the leaders of Liverpool, managing to establish an offensive and defensive balance.

These two players' speed and power, who together have scored 36 goals, are solid demonstrations of the excellent level they both go through. Nevertheless, the third component of this equation that has led Liverpool to get their first title in 30 years is the Brazilian striker, Roberto Firmino (8 goals), considered the team's driving force by coach Jürgen Klopp.

This title came in a great moment for the team's fans and succeeded during the 70s and 80s. Over those years, they won multiple titles, including several European clubs’ competitions. However, the great English soccer trophy had not come during the Premier League era.

Since the 2001-02 season, the reds came second on four occasions. With coaches Gerard Houllier (2001-02) and Rafael Benitez (2008-09), they were pretty close to the Championship.

But this year, every piece within the team worked out just fine. Both defense and offensive are among the best in the league. Also, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson contributed with 12 and 10 assists, respectively.

Once again, Manchester City proved their goal powers with the Fab 4 leading the way: Raheem Sterling, 17 goals; Sergio Agüero, 16; Gabriel Jesus, 13; Kevin De Bruyne, 11. Manchester City’s assists were good: Kevin De Bruyne, 18; David Silva, 10; Riyad Mahrez, 9; Gabriel Jesus, 7; Bernardo Silva, 7. But, when it came to defense, they were a total disaster.

Other Teams Also Had Great Duet Performances:

  • Manchester United: Anthony Martial, 17 goals; Marcus Rashford, 17
  • Arsenal: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, 20 goals; Alexandre Lacazette, 10.
  • Tottenham Hotspur: Harry Kane, 17 goals; Son Heung-Min, 11
  • Everton: Dominic Calvert-Lewin, 13 goals; Richarlison, 12.

But there’s only one champion: Liverpool.
