Stoke City Lets Go Of Mark Hughes For Failure To Deliver

Stoke City F.C lets go of Mark Hughes

Mark Hughes was sacked from Stoke City after managing the club since May 2013. Before this, he had managed Wales, Queen’s Park Rangers, and Manchester City. His career so far has seen him notch over 600 senior appearances.

Hughes was primarily hired to deliver a change of identity in Stoke City. However, he failed to deliver even despite the many resources at his disposal, which were an envy to many premier league managers. Overall, Hughes failure to motivate and organize the players was his greatest undoing in as far as Stoke City is concerned.

Hughes did not shoulder his loss as he engaged in a verbal swipe blaming the Stoke City players for his abrupt ending as Stoke City manager. He said the players let him down even after he gave them several chances to prove themselves.

Saido Berahino was one of the players who Hughes believed cost him his job. Saido joined Stoke City in a £12million deal, however, one year down and he had not scored a single goal for the team. Hughes went on to add that most of the players were performing beneath their potential. He also asserted that Stoke City as a club was “too stretched”.

The fans, on the other hand, were not in any way sympathetic to his sentiments. They boldly paraded banners asking him to leave. Some went on to set off red smoke after the humiliating defeat at Coventry. Many analysts were not shocked when he was fired. Most believe it was a question of ‘when’ not ‘if.’

Hughes remarks that no other manager is better placed to handle Stoke City did not go down well with his bosses and the fans at large. While Hughes has made some progress in the club, his failure to deliver and motivate his team cost him the axe. The pressure is now on for Stoke City to pick another manager to replace Mark Hughes.
