How Well Did the Premier League Players Fare At The 2018 World Cup

Considering the top 4 teams this World Cup 2018 and the positions they finished in, we can gauge and see where English domestic football is heading for the years to come. These teams were England (4th), Belgium (3rd), Croatia (2nd) and France (1st).

England

It’s been almost three decades since England themselves were in a World Cup semi-final, which is a significant achievement that the golden generation was not able to achieve. Nearly all the players in the starting 11 played (and subs) in the Premier League or England. And at the start of the tournament, not many would have expected England to have such a great run. So England would be happy about the potential their young players have for the future World Cups.

Belgium

Belgium has the next most Premier League players in their squad. Some of them include Lukaku, DeBruyn, Hazard, Courtois, etc. Most of their players play for a club in the top 6 in the League. With their best finish in Russia, Belgium will be a force to reckon in Qatar. Most of the core squad will be in their prime and raring to win silverware for Belgium as they look to break their previous World Cup best finish.

Croatia

The funny thing about Croatia was no one expected them to reach the finals at the start of the tournament. They do have a brilliant squad, but it’s important to note they were also the team (in this list) with the fewest players plying their trade in the Premier League (just Lovren). They did surprise everyone with an excellent display from the best generation of footballers they've had.

France

The winners of the World Cup have a lot to celebrate as they add a second star to their jersey by winning the trophy in Russia. The French team has players playing all over the world, but quite a few in the Premier League. The most important players in the squad happen to play in the Premier League (except Mbappe and Griezmann). This includes Kante, Pogba, Lloris, and Giroud. All 4 were core members of the squad.
